If you're seeing this post, I would like to officially welcome you to my brand new blog, My Feminist Voice! Sooo, I think it would only be proper to begin this introduction with a little bit about me. My name's Jensen and I'm going into my third year of studying education at the University of Calgary. I am 19 years old, and was born and identify as female. I was raised most of my life by a single mother along with a little sister here in the Calgary, Alberta area of Canada. Currently, I'm taking a couple spring courses to resurrect my GPA from the past year of quite a few rocky semesters, one of which is an introductory course in the field of Women's Studies. This course happens to be the reason I am writing this blog!
I am an education major, so this is an optional course for me, meaning I decided to take it purely out of interest. I personally believe women's studies is a topic everybody could afford to learn a little more about. I've already learned so much from my professor and my classmates over the first week of the semester. Not only will this course take me further down the road in my academic journey, but it has and will continue to teach me a lot about life outside the protective halls of my university.
Here's a quick fun fact; I was actually a blogger when I was a kid. I never had one steady blog, but I was constantly making new ones and posting regularly about my thoughts, feelings and experiences in the world. Perhaps it contributed to my love of writing and my strong feelings about the use of proper grammar. I haven't written a blog in the last 5 years, but I'm hoping to restart my blogging journey from the ground up. I think I'd be lucky to be as thoughtful and devoted to blogging as little Jensen was, but I'm certainly going to try to be. This time around, I also hope to share things that don't only apply to me and the people in my life. I hope to inspire thoughts in others and create a safe space where all feminists of all ages, genders, sexualities, religions, and experiences can relate to on some level or another, engage with each other and maybe even teach each other a thing or two about the world you may not have discovered on your own.
As this blog is for the social media and activism project in my Women's Studies course, I will be posting about issues, experiences, thoughts and ideas related to womanhood, gender, sexuality and feminist theories. I myself have identified as a feminist since high school at the latest, but if you don't identify as a feminist yourself, I think you'll find we agree on more than you might think if you take the time to read what I have to say. I promise to keep it simple to understand and engaging enough so you don't feel you're reading a boring textbook.
A huge part of my project here is how I engage with others. So with that being said, if you have a question, comment or a thought while reading any of my upcoming posts, please do not hesitate to leave a comment. Even if you disagree with my position, I want to have the opportunity to hear you out. Maybe I can learn something from you guys too. You can comment by entering your name, through your google account or anonymously. The only thing I ask is to be respectful of all. A lot of the issues surrounding feminism and womanhood can be controversial and triggering for some people, myself included. I will always include trigger warnings at the beginning of my posts if they include sensitive content.
Thank you all so much for taking the time to read this! It truly means a lot to me as this course is a very important part of my academic and personal journey. I appreciate it more than you know. I promise my future posts will not be longer than this one. My focus is engagement and discussion, and I'm mostly looking forward to hearing what others have to say! If there's anything in specific you would like me to post about with the relevant topics in mind, feel free to leave a comment and I'll make sure to open up a discussion about it in future posts. Thank you again, and I look forward to building this blog into something inspiring, educational, communicative and great!
